Can businesses really be charitable
Despite the news of “green shoots” leading us out of recession, many businesses are still operating below their capacity and often with fixed or “sunk” operating costs. If this sounds like your company why don’t you consider a more charitable use of this excess capacity? Quickstore recently found that they had spare storage space and offered it to READ International, a project run by student volunteers which collects disused textbooks from schools in the south west and redistributes them to schools in Tanzania. Any books that can’t be sent to Tanzania are sold online raising money towards shipping costs, or are recycled.
As one of READ International’s 22 Book Projects located in universities across the UK, READ Book Project Plymouth will be aiming to send 25,000 books to Tanzania this July. READ International has already successfully delivered over 564,000 textbooks to Tanzania. “We are only too pleased to help on this occasion” comments Andrew Patrick, Quickstore’s Managing Director. “It’s an opportunity for us to put something back. Giving in kind is a very efficient way for businesses to help charities at a small cost to themselves for a larger benefit to the charity”.
