Chamber membership goes from strength to strength

Membership has more than doubled at Exeter Chamber of Commerce & Industry in the last decade reflecting the strength of the city's leading business organisation. In the past four years membership has grown from 306 in 2004 to 445 members in 2008 - a 45% increase.

In an exciting development, the Marsh Barton Forum has decided to merge with the Chamber. MBF members will now receive automatic Chamber membership enabling the organisation to benefit from the influential voice of the Chamber.

Derek Phillips, Chamber Chairman said, ‘We are delighted to welcome the Marsh Barton Forum members to the Chamber. It's very important in a city the size of Exeter that the interests of all sectors of the business community are fully considered in any decision making process that effect long-term economic prospects. This development will further strengthen the Chamber and its broad cross-section membership. '

Earlier in the year the Chamber welcomed the Exeter Property Initiative Group as well as the City Centre Consortium into the organisation, creating two important sub-committees to progress commercial development and retail issues.

The Chamber lunches, attended by between 100 - 140 members each month have provided valuable networking opportunities, with the Annual Chamber dinner last month attracting over 250 businessmen and women. Meanwhile regular meetings with Ben Bradshaw MP for Exeter have enabled the Chamber to raise important issues affecting businesses in the city. Each quarter the Chamber undertakes a survey of its membership to gauge economic conditions, which is then reported to The Bank of England, helping determine interest rates.
