The Devon County Association for the Blind (DCAB) was established as a charity in 1925 and exists to provide to visually impaired people across all areas of Devon. Its main base is at Station House, Topsham with a satellite office at the Optima Low Vision premises in Totnes where low vision clinics are regularly held.

Services include:-

-          Equipment Demonstration – At Station House in Topsham as well as at the Optima Low Vision Clinics in Totnes, a large range of kitchen, household and everyday items, as well as a variety of magnifiers are displayed. The Station House Resource Centre is currently open Tuesday and Friday between 10.00am – 1.00pm. A DCAB member of staff is available at specific times at the Optima Low Vision Clinics to give advice about the charity, as well as offer support and to demonstrate equipment.

-          Newsletter – An information packed quarterly magazine is available to keep members and supporters in touch with the charity, new services and products as well with national eye care developments.

-          Low Vision Clinics are provided from the Station House Resource Centre and also by Optima Low Vision Services, either on a private basis or funded by a contract through the local NHS.

-          Voluntary Visiting Service – Fort the last two years this service has been piloted in Mid-Devon and Torbay and successfully supports large numbers of visually impaired people in their own homes. Volunteers are carefully matched by a local co-ordinator to visually impaired people. These volunteers provide befriending support or undertake other tasks for them. The Charity aims to expand this service throughout Devon.

-          Grants – Special grants are made available to visually impaired people in accordance with DCAB guidelines.

We increasingly have people who want to support the Charity is so many different ways; whether through fundraising, giving their time to work in our centre or even by becoming a member of the Charity. Membership is a really good way of keeping in touch with the Charity and lending your support. We are launching a new membership scheme and this costs just £12 per year (£10 by direct debit). Members receive our informative quarterly magazine and get to regularly hear about Charity news and developments.
