Exeter BID

An easy way to tell us your hopes for Exeter's city centre in relation to an Exeter BID

Exeter Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other key business partners from across the city recently initiated a ballot to introduce an Exeter BID (an initiative whereby a levy on the business rates would be pooled to create a huge sum for city centre improvements).

The big idea

The Exeter BID scheme is not about replacing City Council money.

Nor will it allow bigger shops and organisations to dominate decisions regarding spending, as all businesses have an equal say.  Furthermore the introduction of the Area Based Grants scheme would have injected significant sums into defined areas of the city.  The Steering group were very aware that many of our rival towns and cities e.g. Plymouth, Taunton, Truro, Torquay, Newton Abbot, Paignton, Barnstaple, Exmouth and Okehampton either have a successful BID scheme operating or are about to ballot their businesses.

The ballot

The ballot was held in July 2011 with all businesses within the BID district, except those with rateable values under £10,000, eligible to vote.

The result of the ballot was very close and it could have been implemented if only for a small number of additional positive votes.

Next steps

The Exeter Business Improvement District (BID) Steering Group is considering whether to put forward revised proposals for establishing a BID for Exeter's city centre area. Before doing so, the Steering Group feel that it is very important to obtain your feedback on this subject.

If you could spend a little time answering the questions on the following questionnaire, it would be very helpful.
