Exeter Business Survey – March 2008

Quarterly survey bucks national trend

The latest Exeter Chamber of Commerce member survey for the 1st quarter of 2008 suggests business confidence continues to be strong, with 98% of members reporting high to medium confidence despite the present uncertainty in the global marketplace.

Investment has increased with 40% of members investing in their company compared to 17% a year ago. Furthermore, 39% are planning future investment in comparison to 17% last year, with 43% intending to employ more staff. Despite the national downturn, 49% of respondents reported similar sales levels to March 2007, with only a handful of members reporting falling sales. Margins have remained constant for 58% of companies, with a smaller number, 22%, reporting margins up on the last quarter.

58% of companies are working to full capacity, with 51% reporting no difficulties in recruitment, compared to 66% of members being badly or moderately affected in March 2007.
