Exeter Business Survey March 2010

 EMPLOYMENT UP!

Chamber members are reporting an increase in jobs with 93% employing the same or more staff in this quarter as opposed to only 43% a year ago.  The first Exeter Business Survey of 2010 reveals more good news for workers: 60% of companies surveyed will be giving pay increases to their staff this year.

The good news continues for businesses in the area.  Nearly twice as many firms said their sales have increased over the last quarter, than they did at this time last year.  The figure has risen from 28% in March 2009 to 55% now.

Derek Philips, Chairman of Exeter Chamber of Commerce & Industry said, "The results show a really positive start to 2010 which we hope continues following the coming Budget and General Elections."

The results of the survey were presented to the Bank of England's Agent for the South West, Kevin Butler on Thursday 11 March.  Kate Barker, a member of the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee, who is on a two-day visit to Devon and Cornwall, joined the meeting.

She repeated her view to Members that for the overall UK economy the recovery will be bumpy. Speaking afterwards she said, "Today's discussions with Exeter Chamber revealed improving confidence amongst Members but still a lot of uncertainty, particularly with regard to investment plans."
