QUARTERLY SURVEY REVEALS SALES INCREASE FOR FIFTH CONSECUTIVE QUARTER

The Exeter Chamber of Commerce & Industry member survey (4th quarter 2009) reveals sales have consistently increased for five consecutive quarters and the last time the figure reached this quarter's figure was March 2008. This represents an increase of over 60% of members recording a much needed boost to their business since this time last year.

Derek Philips, Chairman of Exeter Chamber of Commerce & Industry said, ‘It is extremely encouraging to see such positive results which are echoed in the level of business confidence where only 11% reported low levels. We started to see signs of recovery in the last quarter and these results provide grounds for even more optimism.'

Sales margins are up substantially with 33% of the 100 plus members from small, medium and large companies surveyed reporting an increase, which is 60% up on last quarter. The cash flow of 33% has seen an increase of 60% from last quarter.

An element of slight concern is that 20% revealed a decrease in the numbers employed compared with only 15% last quarter and 17% in March 2009, however only 9% predict further staff cuts in the future.

Exeter Chamber of Commerce & Industry represents the interests of around 500 small, medium and large businesses in Exeter, with the Chamber's quarterly business survey reporting a cross section of 20% of its members.  For more information about Exeter Chamber of Commerce & Industry membership and the quarterly survey, visit http://www.exeterchamber.co.uk/
