NEW HOME GOODS WAREHOUSE FOR WORLDWIDE DISTRIBUTION OF CLEANING EQUIPMENTNational Award winning building contractor R G Spiller Limited with offices in Chard and Durrington and Yeovil based architect James Ewart Fox hands over the newly completed warehouse to Numatic International Limited. Based in Chard and known globally for the manufacture of the iconic ‘Henry’ Vacuum Cleaner, the company is one of the largest employers in the region with 700 staff. Numatic is the only manufacturer still producing vacuum cleaners in volume in the UK. Its total range extends to over 5,000 different finished goods for the commercial and industrial cleaning market, from a mop to a ride-on Scrubber/Drier costing over £10,000. With such a wide product range and export representing 40% of output, around 98% of variants are built to order. Total production runs at a level of 4,500 finished products per day, and that takes up a lot of space! Andrew Smith Head of Manufacturing - Numatic International said: “As a company we had substantially increased production space and output and had progressively become very tight on space for storing finished goods awaiting despatch. Home and Export used to be housed in one warehouse so there was a pressing need to build a second building particularly as we have ambitious expansion plans for growth in both home and export markets. With building projects of this scale, we try very hard to look to the future, so the project also incorporated an additional upper office floor which will give us further room to expand, as and when we need it. We always prefer to work with local suppliers and R G Spiller was successful in the tender process. As we already have a long standing relationship with the contractor and architect as well as the Structural Engineer Stephen Back Associates we were confident that the works would be carried out to a high standard. There was excellent communication with monthly site meetings which helped to make the process more streamlined.” Andrew Howard, Managing Director of R G Spiller Limited said: “We have a relationship with Numatic which spans over 15 years and constantly strive to meet the client’s high expectations and quality of works. Working closely to James Fox’s brief, the main challenge of the project was that it was a brownfield site and located on a busy trading estate. The fact that it is a 100 year old site with drainage problems added further challenges. We also had to work on existing buildings where the client required access in the areas of construction to ensure continuation of the business activities.” The 5,350 M2 warehouse was procured as a single stage tender programme taking 62 weeks to complete. Split into 3 phases the £3.2m project designed and project managed by Yeovil based James Fox Architect comprised the construction of a new warehouse facility and office area within.
CHARD BUILDING CONTRACTOR SECURES SUBSTANTIAL CONTRACT TO BUILD YEOVIL'S FIRST NEW 21ST CENTURY NURSING HOME
Building contractor, R G Spiller Limited with offices in Chard and Durrington has won the tender for Phase 1 of a high profile nursing care facility in Yeovil, the first geothermally heated building and newly constructed nursing home of the 21st century in the area. The state-of-the-art Hendford Nursing Home is being developed on the former Milk Marketing Board site at Hendford Hill, Yeovil on behalf of owners/developers Aurora Care Limited who already operates the award winning Hurst Manor Nursing Home in Martock.
Construction on site will take place following the official cutting of the turf by Yeovil's Mayor, Wes Read on the 26th January. Due to open in early 2010 Hendford Nursing Home is offering 40 beds for much needed nursing, palliative and dementia care to the elderly population of Yeovil and South Somerset with 24 hour registered nursing staffing.
Managing Director Michael Lawson said "We are very excited that construction of the nursing home is due to commence. We selected local consultants and are aware that R G Spiller has the experience and expertise to complete the project to the very highest building standards incorporating both state of the art care facilities and cutting edge ecological features. When complete the full facility will create in excess of 100 much needed jobs in the local region".
Andrew Howard, Managing Director of R G Spiller Limited said "We are delighted to have been awarded this prestigious contract. The ecological credentials of the building will be outstanding. Rigorous insulation standards have been adhered to in the design and an innovative rain water recovery system will recycle water for use in laundry and WCs. The building will also feature Yeovil's first geothermal heating system, drawing heat from the ground via ground source heat pumps and thereby minimising the consumption of fossil fuels and creation of CO2. "
Phase 1 of the £8 - 10 million project designed by Alan Young Limited of Yeovil and funded by Royal Bank of Scotland is expected to take 15 months to build with further care related buildings being constructed on the site following completion of the first nursing home.
