The New Year’s Resolution every workplace should make!

If someone said to you that you could achieve up to 40% reduction in absenteeism and get 8 times more focus from your staff, you’d be interested wouldn’t you? If you were also told that this could all be achieved for FREE, you’d definitely be reading on. Now add to the mix the fact that what is good for your business is also good for your staff then surely it has to be a no brainer.

And what is this golden opportunity? It’s a simple walk.

The Big Devon March is back for March 2018, challenging every workplace in Devon to walk a little more and complete the length of a virtual South West Coast Path.

The Big Devon March is a Devon-wide walking campaign being run by Active Devon on behalf of Devon County Council. It’s all about inspiring us to be creative in the ways we fit more walking into our everyday routines.

Join in with teams of up to 6 people. All that’s required is to walk more, log your distance and win prizes. It’s all completely free and lots of fun.

This year we have teamed up with the South West Coast Path. This national walking trail is 630 miles long. For every mile you walk during March, either alone or with your team members, to or from work, in the evening or at weekends, your progress will be plotted along this iconic trail. If you’d like to use the challenge as a way of raising money for charity, you could consider investing back into the South West Coast Path Association which has to maintain all 630 miles of path all year round, for public benefit.

Walking has widely acknowledged mental, physical and emotional benefits, which all play an important part in workplace wellbeing. Paul Mouland leads a weekly lunchtime walk around Exeter University’s campus.  “It gives staff the opportunity to get away from their desk during lunchtime and what we tend to find is people that come out on these walks, actually find when they go back to their office they are refocused, fresh, they’ve got new ideas on what they’re working on and are really keen to get stuck back into work.”

By joining the Big Devon March you will get access to a free online platform for logging activity where you can compete against other businesses to reach the end of the virtual South West Coast Path and reach the top of the Big Devon March leaderboard. There are incentives and prizes along the way and Active Devon will help you set off on the right foot by inviting you to attend the Big Devon March launch event on the morning of Thursday 1st February. This is a great opportunity to collect Big Devon March goodies, find out more about ways to engage staff in simple, fun and sociable ways of being more active during the day and accessing grant funding for active travel.

Once signed up, you will get access to a free online platform and an easy to use app for logging walking activity. From 1st of March the race will be on to see how far around the virtual South West Coast Path teams can go.

It’s easy to get involved in the Big Devon March. Visit Active Devon’s website www.activedevon.org/MarchWithUs and complete the simple Expression of Interest form.
