A Devon brewery has been at the forefront of delivering vital supplies of PPE during the Covid-19 crisis - as well as their own ale.
Exeter Brewery has packed its vans with thousands of items of PPE and delivered them to 100 health centres and GP surgeries throughout the length and breadth of Devon.
And as a thankyou for the difficult work being done by frontline workers, they even handed over complimentary cases of their top selling Avocet beer.
The managing director of Exeter Brewery, Alan Collyer, said when pubs were forced to call last orders in the lockdown "80% of our business stopped overnight".
The firm saw a sharp rise in its bottle sales to its trade customers plus its own retail sales direct from their brewing base in St Davids in Exeter.
Alan and his staff started home deliveries around the county and he said:"That enabled us to keep going. Small lack sales of canned and bottled beer and lager took off and though we are at only 35% of normal trade, this has enabled some brewing to start again."
Alan offered to store PPE at their HQ but then said the brewery had the capacity to deliver the PPE throughout Devon - and they have spent three hectic weeks making sure van loads of the much needed equipment was delivered to the 100 medical sites around Devon - while still carrying out their own home delivery beer service.
The PPE deliveries included 35,000 masks and over 1,000 bottles of sanitisers.
And included in the PPE drops were 12 bottle cases of the firm's best selling Avocet beer.
The brewery - which produces over a million pints a year - is now waiting to find out of they will keep doing both tasks as the lockdown eases.
But the firm has earned rave reviews from grateful health staff.
Axminster medical centre in east Devon said:"Thank you very much to Exeter Brewery who has kindly supplied us with face masks, alcohol hand gel and, perhaps most importantly, a case of excellent Avocet. Drink responsibly folks!"
Tavyside Health Centre in Tavistock wrote:"A massive thank you to Exeter Brewery who very kindly supplied face masks, hand gel, paper hand towels and donated Avocet Organic Ale to the Practice. We are very grateful for your kind generosity!!"
Compass House Medical Centre in Brixham wrote:"A huge thank you to Exeter Brewery for gifting us valuable PPE and a few bottles of beer for our staff. We really appreciate all the items gifted to us by the community."
Brannam Medical Centre in Barnstaple said:"Thankyou very much Exeter Brewery for PPE, hand sanitiser and most of all Avocet ale! We really appreciate your generosity."
